Quick Hits After a Few Days in Mesa

  • An MRI has revealed the LHP Ted Lilly, who will miss the start of the season with an arm related injury, has no serious knee injury according to a report from Cubs.com.
  • Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo told Paul Sullivan that Milton Bradley "was always kind of mad".
  • Speaking of Santo, he is ready to start a new season. The first Cubs WGN broadcast of the year is March 4, and Ronny can't wait. He'll be joined by Pat Hughes in the booth as the Cubs kick of the Cactus League schedule. In addition, Ron (who has diabetes) is feeling great.
  • Although position players do not officially have to report until next week, all but six of the Cubs position players have already reported to get a head start. The six missing are Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramiez, Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Theriot, Kosuke Fukudome, and Starlin Castro.
  • Xavier Nady is working on throwing mechanics with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
  • Carlos Silva reported to camp out of shape. The Tribune tells us that Lou wants to get him in better condition.
  • Carlos Zambrano says that he finally will bring a better attitude this season.
  • Ryan Theriot and the Cubs met in an arbitration hearing today in Florida. The decision should be announced tomorrow according to Carrie Muskat.
  • Randy Wells is a key to the Cubs rotation this year. The young righty is hoping to repeat what he did in his rookie season in 2009.
  • Arizona Phil from TCR gives a nice detailed description of the scene at Fitch Park.
  • Check out some great pics and blog posts over at Boys of Spring.

Jersey Number Changes and Info

  • Xavier Nady will take over #22, which is the number he wore for the Pirates.
  • Tom Gorzelanny, who wore #22 last season, will switch to #23.
  • John Gaub, who did have #32, will now sport #48.
  • Marlon Byrd also wore #22 last year, but he wanted #24 instead.
  • Greg Maddux has been in uniform wearing the familiar number 31. I wonder if he had to get Fergie Jenkins permission.
  • Jeff Gray will wear #34, which has not been used since Kerry Wood left the Cubs in 2008.
  • Chad Tracy will wear #9, Kevin Millar will wear #15, and Bobby Scales will switch from #15 to #19.

That's it for now, but I'll keep you posted!
