Radio Recaps, UPDATED

John Dewan joined Mike Murphey today to for his "stat of the week":

  • Dewan says that Ryan Theriot is an above average defensive player at SS.
  • John had developed a complex system and says that his stats show that Theriot is very good on balls hit in the air.
  • In the last 10 years the Bulls have a .371 winning %. The Blackhawks have a .468 %. The Bears have a .500%. The Sox have .527 WP. The Cubs have only a .489 winning percentage the last 10 years combined!
  • John says that Carlos Marmol threw 705 fastball and 706 sliders in 2008. Almost exactly 50/50 ratio!
  • In 2006 Marmol threw only 8% sliders and had an ERA over 6. The last 2 years he threw about half sliders and has had a great ERA.
  • A-Rod has a 49% chance of breaking the record according to Dewan. He also gives him 90% chance of getting to 700 home runs.

Steve Stone joined David Kaplan on Monday on Sports Central to discuss the Cubs and other baseball topics. Here's the recap:

  • Steve says that A-Rod and Barry Bonds would have been Hall of Famers even without using performance enhancing drugs.
  • Stoney's not surprised with the news that Alex Rodrigez used steroids from 2001-2003.
  • Steve think Jim Hendry has addressed the Cubs needs this off season.
  • He says that the White Sox are not as convertible going into Spring as the Cubs.
  • If the Cubs play the kind of baseball that they're capable of they should be able to win the division with ease.
  • He says that any team with Albert Pujols has a chance, but he doesn't think anyone can challenge the Cubs.
  • Steve and Kap agree that the Cubs don't need Jake Peavy. 1. Jake benefits from one of the best pitching parks in baseball. 2. He made less than 30 starts in 2008 and Steve wants to know why. 3. The Cubs don't need Jake Peavy to have a great rotation.
  • The Cubs only have 1 question mark in the rotation and that is Harden.
  • Stone thinks that in a few year Vitters could be the starting 3rd baseman for the Chicago Cubs.
  • The biggest point from Steve about Peavy, "Your needs in February are very rarely your needs in July." The Cubs could save the money and 4-5 players so they can make a move in July.
  • There will be lots of teams with players out on the market in July.
  • Steve says that Soriano is not a good lead off guy. If Aaron Miles plays he would rather see him leading off.

Baseball Prospectus' Joe Sheehan joins the Boers and Bernstein show and discusses in detail the rosters of the Cubs:

  • The Cubs predicted to have the best record in the National League.
  • Joe said the team has a lot of guys in their peek.
  • Sheehan thinks that the Cubs have to win now. They need Peavy because they have a 2-3 year window to a win a World Series.
  • Ryan Dempster could pitch exactly as well as he did in 2008 and will his ERA will probably go up.
  • Bradley his from both sides of the plate, hits for power, and draws a lot of walks, but the question mark is the injuries.
  • PECOTA is an invention by Nate Silver. Every off season he sits down and figures all these systems and numbers and then presents projections for the next season.
