MLB Draft Preview: Day 2

It’s time to take a look at the Cubs First Year Player Drafts Pasts. Let’s break down who they took in the first round of each year, and what Players they could have had instead.

2001:
Cubs First Round Pick: Mark Prior (#2 overall)
Where is he now?: Still in MLB with Padres, but has spent most of career on the DL.
Who the Cubs could have had:

• Gavin Floyd
• Mark Teixeira
• Mike Fontenot or Aaron Heilman (both selected in the first round, current Cubs)
• Noah Lowry
• Dan Haren
• J.J. Hardy

2002:
Cubs First Round Pick: Bobby Brownlie (#21 overall)
Where is he now?: Last year Brownlie played in the Nationals organization. He never made it to the big leagues.
Who the Cubs could have had with that pick:

• Jeff Francoer
• Matt Cain
• Micah Owings
• Jonathan Broxton
• Brian McCann
• Curtis Granderson

2003:
Cubs First Round Pick: Ryan Harvey (#6 overall)
Where is he now?: Playing in Rockies organization. Has yet to make Big League debut, has not played higher than AA.
Who the Cubs could have had with that pick:

• Carlos Quentin
• Brian Anderson
• Aaron Hill
• Tony Gywnn Jr.

2004:
Cubs did not pick in first round.

2005:
Cubs First Round Pick: Mark Pawelek (#20 overall)
Where is he now?: Has not made it past Class A. Injured himself in 2007 when he tripped over his Play Station.
Who the Cubs could have had with that pick:

• Colby Rasmus
• Jacob Ellsbury
• Chase Headly
• Yunel Escobar
• Kevin Slowey
  

2006:
Cubs First Round Pick: Tyler Colvin (#13 overall)
Where is he now?: Still in Cubs organization. Has not made it past AA. Batting .250 with a .326 OBP in 32 games with the Daytona Cubs this season.

2007:
Cubs First Round Pick: Josh Vitters (#3 overall)
Where is he now?: Tearing it up in Class A ball in Cubs organization. This pick might have actually been a good one.

2008:
Cubs First Round Pick: Andrew Cashner
Where is he now?: 1.75 ERA in 8 games with Daytona so far this year.

Let’s hope the Cubs do better this year than they have in the past!
