Lilly and Soriano Injuries, Ramiez, Trade Deadline, and More

Lilly Moved Back
LHP Ted Lilly has been dealing with a minor knee injury and he will not make is scheduled start tonight. Randy Wells will go for the Cubs against the Nats at 6:05, Kevin Hart will be called up to start tomorrow, and Lilly has been moved to Monday in Philly.

Soriano's Jammed Finger
Alfonso Soriano is still day-to-day with his jammed finger.

Ramirez HR
On yesterday's post, I reported that Aramis Ramirez is trying to get his swing back and most likely will not show a lot of power the rest of the season. Last night, A-Ram proved that wrong by going deep for the first time since coming of the DL. The solo homer in the 3rd last night puts him 1 RBI shy of 900 in his career, and 3 runs scored away from 700.

Cubs Close to Signing Draft Pick
According to Cubs Corner, the Cubs are very close to signing 2nd round draft pick D.J. LeMahieu. The SS played well in the CWS this year.

Trade Deadline Failures
According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, midseason trade are usually not the answer for contenders, but fans still want to see their team making moves! Rich Harden was a celebrated acquisition last July, but he has not had that much of an impact on the Cubs, however the trade lost 4 top prospect including pitcher Sean Gallagher; and forced out All Star Jason Marquis.

Here's a look at other Cubs trade deadline (July) moves in recent year:

  • 2007: Traded Rob Bowen to the A's for Jason Kendall
  • 2007: Traded Cesar Izturis to the Pirates for cash.
  • 2004: Traded Alex S. Gonzalez, Brendan Harris, and Francis Beltran to the Expos, part of a 4 team deal that sent Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Murton to the Cubs from Boston.
  • 2003: Kenny Lofton and Aramis Ramirez traded from Pittsburgh to the Cubs in exchange for Jose Hernandez, Matt Bruback, and a Bobby Hill.
  • 2003: Pittsburgh sent Randall Simon to the Cubs for Ray Sadler.

Will the Cubs make a move this year? 2 week left to find out...

That's it for now, I'll keep you posted!

  3. 6 walks really bother me, and i am not sure if it will stop bothering me. The cubs got lucky tonight, but next time this happens, the cubs could lose the game. They better go out and get a bull pen pitcher. They need a LHP that throws strikes. Also, lave Marshall in the bullpen, please!!

  4. Yeah, and also bothers me when the started pitches 6-7 innings and allows 2-3 runs, (not last night but a lot of nights), then the bullpen come in and someone give up 2 runs in one inning to blow the game. I know that's why the guys are the BULLPEN but still. Gregg has been looking good and Marshall usually pitches pretty well, but I'm not in the Marmol fan club. I don't think B.J. Ryan is the answer to the Cubs pen either.
