Lilly, Dempster, and of course the Deadline!

Aramis Ramiez is back!
He's the RBI Machine! It takes a few weeks to start seeing the ball well again after missing a significant amount of time, and now that Rami has had that he's crushing the baseball again. Today he had 4 hits including a homerun, 2 2-baggers, and 3 RBIs. He was just a triple shy of the cycle. It's also great to have some protection for Derrek Lee, who also went deep in the Cubs win today.

Ronny also back
It's good to hear Cubs legend Ron Santo back in the broadcast booth on WGN Radio after he missed 2 weeks feeling ill. Ron said today that he is feeling much better, and being back in the booth is better than any therapy or medicine for the #1 Cubs fan.

Lilly Now has Shoulder issue
Ted Lilly has been battling through a knee injury that caused him to push back his last start, and now he will have an MRI tomorrow on his shoulder and "will have a hard time avoiding the DL" according to Bruce Miles. Just when the Cubs are close to getting one key starting pitcher back, they lose another. Kevin Hart will get the start in Lilly's place tomorrow, and Rich Harden will go Sunday against the Reds.

Dempster Ready to Go
Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster told his manager that he's ready to come off the DL and pitch on Sunday, however that won't happen. Lou said on WGN Radio today that the team doctors and trainers have advised him to give Demp's toe a little extra team, even though the X-rays brought good news yesterday. Lou says he'll wait until Wednesday against Houston to send Ryan to the hill.

Bradley's Option Vests
The Cubs switch hitting right fielder has now played in over 75 games, which means his option for 2011, worth $12MM, vests.

Soto Still Out
Geovany Soto's injury has been really causing Koyie Hill to catch lots of innings because there are no other catchers on the roster. Jake Fox is the back up, so he cannot pinch hit as much in case of an injury to Hill, in which case Fox would be the only other catching option for that game. The Cubs almost acquired Chris Coste earlier this month according to MLB Trade Rumors.

A week to the Deadline
The MLB Trade Deadline is a week from today, will the Cubs make any moves? I wouldn't expect any big splashes like Rich Harden a year ago or Aramis Ramiez is 2003. However, the Cubs could try to add a piece such as a left handed relief pitcher or an average middle infielder. The Cubs do have some interested in a plethora of different relievers, and a few middle infielders including Freddy Sanchez of the Pirates. If the Cubs can add a second baseman or a short stop, look for Mike Fontenot to see limited playing time, or even a stint at AAA.

That's it for today, Let's go get another win tomorrow!

  1. They need to find a catcher. Could Chris Synder be on the radar from ARZ?

  2. It looks like they're going to just use Fox as backup until Soto come back. I don't like Hill catching all these innings, it's hurting his bat.
