Cubs Notes: Fontenot, Fossum, Baker, Murton, and More

  • The Cubs are wearing Red Hats this weekend for the 4th of July. All MLB teams wear the patriotic hats on Memorial Day, July 4th weekend, and 9-11.
  • Today warnings were issued after each pitcher plunked the opposing team's big hitter; Lee for the Cubs, Fielder for the Brewers.
  • Lou says he needs more out of Mike Fontenot.
  • The Cubs have signed minor league pitcher Casey Fossum to a minor league contract and he has reported to AAA Iowa.
  • "He's basically from the DeRosa mold," Lou said of new infielder Jeff Baker.
  • Johnson, Guzman, and Ramirez all rehabbing tonight. I'll have a post up for you tomorrow morning recapping the rehabs!
  • Derrek Lee has been moved into 13th on the All-Time Cubs Home Run list with 142.
  • The AAA All star teams have been announced. The I-Cubs lone representative is catcher Chris Robinson. Former Cub Matt Murton will start in the OF for the PCL team! The game is July 15, a Wednesday night, at 9 PM CT and will be on ESPN2.
  • Neal Cotts is done for the year with the Tommy John surgery that I mentioned yesterday.
  • Alfonso Soriano was back in the lineup today in LF and hitting lead off after 2 days off.
  • Carrie Muskat mentioned on her blog that Mike Fontenot has been struggling, has options left, and that Andres Blanco has been hitting well. Could Fontenot be sent to AAA on Monday when Ramirez is activated? We'll see!

That's it for now!
