UPDATED: Ramirez Return, No Action at Deadline?, HR Derby, and More

Dempster to the DL (Updated at 3:50 CT)
Tonight's starting pitcher Ryan Dempster has suddenly been placed on the 15-day DL with a broken toe. Right when we thought the team was healthy, this happens. This seems very sudden and random, it is not yet known how he broke it, or how long he will be out. Carlos Zambrano will take the ball in his place tonight. Kevin Hart has been called back up from AAA to take his place in the roster, Hart was send down yesterday. Zambrano will be pitching on 3 day rest tonight, and I'd expect him to start one game of the double header on Sunday. Tomorrow's starter is not yet known, but it could be either Hart or Jeff Samardzija.

Ramirez Return
3B Aramis Ramirez returned to the Cubs lineup yesterday. Aramis was hitting 5th. He went 0-4 in his return, but the Cubs won the game 4-2. He says he's not 100%, but he's healthy enough to play.

Lee Red Hot
The Cubs have need someone to step up and carry this team and D-Lee has done just that. He went 2-4 with another home run last night in the win. Lee did not earn a trip to the All Star game because of the over load of NL First Basemen, but his play has been stellar none the less.

Rookie of the Year?
Last night on the radio broadcast on WGN-AM Ron Santo mentioned that Randy Wells could be in the rookie of the year running. He pitched 6 strong innings last night. The rookie has started 11 games and pitched well in 10 of them with the Cubs this year. He has a 2.48 ERA.

No Cubs in Derby
My poll asks which Cub would win an all Cub HR Contest, but no Cubs will be in the MLB 2009 Homerun Derby. The 4 NL participants are all first basemen: Adrian Gonzalez, Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, and Prince Fielder.

Leadoff Man
Alfonso Soriano longer the Cubs leadoff man. "That's fine, as long as we're playing like we're playing," he said. Kosuke will continue to hit lead off VS RHP and Reed Johnson is going to lead off against southpaws.

Pitching Rotation
Rich Harden will go on Friday against the Cardinals, Ted Lilly on Saturday, and Randy Wells and Ryan Dempster will handle the doubleheader on Sunday. Carlos Zambrano could be available out of the bullpen on Sunday because of the doubleheader and only an 11 man staff.

Wrigley Field Makeover?
The ballpark could undergo some renovations as soon as the Rickets family gives the team the go ahead. More info from the Sun-Times. By the way, the latest report is that the sale is "very, very close"

Cubs May Not be Active at Deadline
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is on July 31. Cubs GM Jim Hendry hinted Monday that the Cubs may not do much at the deadline, whether the Ricketts family is officially in control of the team or not. Jim said, "If our guys all play like we're capable of, you don't have to do a whole lot of things. There aren't a whole lot of places to fit somebody if we perform the way we're supposed to."

Freel PTBNL
The Player to be named from the Ryan Freel trade is a PTBNL OR Cash. It will be decided by Oct. 15.

Rule 5 Kid
The Cubs are doing everything they can to keep Rule 5 Draft Pick David Patton. If he is sent to AAA, he will be returned to the Rockies. Patton might be spending a lot of time on the DL until rosters expand in September. He has been placed on the 15-day DL with a groin injury to make room for Angel Guzman in the pen. Rule 5 states that a player must be active for 90 days, so now he can spend the rest of the year of the DL and the Cubs will keep rights to him. The Cubs lost Donnie Veal in the Rule 5 draft to Pittsburgh, and it doesn't look like they will get him back either.

July Wrigley Field Promo Schedule
July 3 was floppy hat day, July 4 was 4th of July cap day, and the 5th was blue T-shirt day. Here are the promotions for the rest of the month:
