Former Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis did his best to show the Cubs front office that they should not have traded him today. Marquis pitched 7 strong innings and had a big hit in his return to Wrigley Field.
Colorado scored their first 2 runs on a 2-run single by Marquis in the 2nd. Smith homered to make it 3-0 in the 3rd. Atkins single to bring home another run and it was a 4-0 deficit.
Rich Harden left the game after giving up 4 runs over just 3 innings. The bullpen did a great job, however, so the Cubs were still in the game. Today David Patton pitched 2 shutout innings, Luis Vizcaino pitched a scoreless frame. Cotts and Guzman also did very well.
Micah Hoffpauir finally got the Cubs on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th.
The score was 5-1 as we headed to the bottom of the 9th. Derrek Lee hit a solo home run to lead off the 9th to make it a 3-run game. After a Mike Fontenot walk, and a Reed Johnson bloop single. Rockies closer Houston Street was removed from the game, and Geovany Soto represented the tying run with nobody out! Then it all came crashing down when Mike Fontenot made a BIG base running mistake and tried to advance to third on a ball that barely got passed the catcher. There was really no reason to try to advance at all, with the tying run at the plate his run was meaningless. Geovany Soto hit into a game ending double play to end it. Final Score: Brewers 5, Cubs 2.
Game Highlight: Fontenot's baserunning blunder in the 9th.
My Player of the Game: Derrek Lee for a great game at the plate including the 9th inning home run.
Up Next: Game 1 of a 4 game series with the Cardinals tomorrow at 1:20 CT and Wrigley. Sean Marshall will make his first start of the year for the Cubs.
Let's get back on track tomorrow!
